A male suspect who was being held at Den Hey-Acker Dutch juvenile detention facility took two of the staff hostage after threatening them with a pistol. He then took the hostages by car across the border into Belgium before letting them out in a grocery parking lot in Hoogstraten. According to an eyewitness he was closely followed by Belgian police as he drove into the town of Sint-Lenaarts. Another eyewitness claims the young man then got out of the car and opened fire on Belgian officers before he was shot and killed. They claim that 30 shots were fired however that has yet to be confirmed. The detention center commented that it was a very traumatic incident for the staff involved. The mayor of Sint-Lenaarts sent condolences to the family of the suspect. Currently the incident is being investigated by Dutch and Belgian authorities to determine exactly what transpired.
