A Cameroonian soldier was shot and killed and another was injured by separatists in the city of Buea. A group had previously claimed that they were planning to target the city as it is hosting the Africa Cup of Nations soccer tournament. Despite attempts to increase the presence of security forces ahead of the matches it appears that the country’s government has not managed to dissuade the group which seeks to create the nation of Ambazonia. The attack has not impacted the scheduled games. Cameroon has been engaged in an insurgency since 2017 as the Anglophone region has contested perceived efforts by the Francophone government to marginalize them.
