An RAF Typhoon jet shot down a potentially hostile small drone over Syria on December 14th. Sources claim that the shootdown took place near the coalition’s Al Tanf military base. No information is yet available about who was in control of the drone. The UK Defence Secretary Bill Wallace claimed it was a strong showing of the RAF’s combat capabilities. This is the first time that the RAF has had an air to air kill since the Falkland Wars against Argentina. It is thought that the air crew was relatively close to the drone, possibly within line of sight when they launched an ASRAAM missile to take it down.
